Our services

Asbestos Consulting

Professional asbestos management consulting services developed in Ontario in the late eighties after the introduction of Ontario Regulation 654/85 respecting Asbestos on Construction Projects and in Buildings and Repair Operations. The regulation recognized asbestos as a health hazard and imposed strict rules on the handling of asbestos-containing materials (ACM’s).

Twenty years later ACM’s are still present in buildings, predominantly in those built before the mid-eighties. The presence of ACM in a building presumes the likelihood of exposure of building occupants to airborne asbestos and imposes strict duties on the building owner. Handling of ACM is subject to rigorous procedures.

The asbestos-related consulting services provided by Abacon involve identification and assessment of the condition of ACM, recommendation on how to handle the material and assistance in remediation.

Abacon provides a full range of asbestos management consulting services as follows:

  • Asbestos location survey, bulk-sampling and assessment
  • Design and implementation of asbestos management programs
  • Electronic asbestos inventory databases
  • Asbestos management training courses
  • Development of site-specific asbestos abatement specifications
  • Inspection of asbestos removal projects and associated reinstatement work
  • Area and occupational air sampling
  • Asbestos-related analytical services

Abacon’s laboratory provides phase contrast microscopy (PCM) analysis for determinations of airborne fibre concentrations. Our lab participates in a quality assurance program. Other asbestos-related analytical services include polarized light microscopy (PLM, EPA 600) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

From our base in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), we extend our asbestos consulting services to all of Ontario and Canada.

Mould Consulting

Mould consulting services have become a part of Abacon’s daily operations since the late nineties when fungal contamination in public buildings and portable classrooms became a major issue in the Greater Toronto Area. The highly adaptable microscopic fungi in outdoor and indoor environments have become an interesting topic in the media.

Many health and safety officials and building inspectors require that the indoor space be free of mould. How much mould may be allowed indoors to consider it normal? If you are faced with a question like this then hiring mould consulting professionals may be justified.

Abacon will be able to answer your question. Our consulting services in the fields of mould, and fungal contamination include:

  • Inspection and sampling for mould
  • Air sampling for airborne fungal elements
  • Inspection of concealed building spaces
  • Inspection of HVAC systems
  • Identification of mould amplification sites
  • Assessment of exposure to mould
  • Design of mould removal and remediation
  • Inspection of mould abatement projects
  • Assistance in water damage restoration

Several toxigenic and pathogenic moulds like Stachybotrys, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Trichoderma, Fusarium may grow in indoor environments. Fungal growth develops on cellulose-containing materials like lumber, paper, and drywall, often in concealed building spaces and in moist locations.

Areas typically affected by mould include basements, crawl spaces, attics, portable classrooms, and library archives. Attics are often affected by bird droppings, a potent source of Histoplasma capsulatum and Cryptococcus neoformans.

Mycotoxins produced by moulds may induce toxic effects in some people. Adverse health effects range from irritations and infections to allergic and asthmatic reactions. The deaths of infants in Cleveland, Ohio have been associated with the presence of Stachybotrys atra and related to water problems in basements.

From our base in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), we extend our mould consulting services to all of Ontario and Canada.

Indoor Air Quality

In the field of indoor air quality (IAQ), Abacon provides the following consulting services:

  • Profiling and logging of indoor air quality complaints
  • Monitoring for IAQ parameters such as relative humidity (RH), temperature, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide
  • Inspection of the HVAC systems
  • Sampling for indoor air contaminants
  • Analysis and interpretation of IAQ data
  • Identification of problem sources

The symptoms of poor indoor air are often referred to as tight (TBS) or sick building syndrome (SBS) and include a variety of complaints that can be associated with inadequately controlled indoor air parameters:

  • Insufficient or excessive humidity
  • Too low or too high temperature
  • Improper air exchange and airflow rates
  • An excessive amount of carbon dioxide and/or carbon monoxide
  • Contamination of indoor air

The problems of indoor air quality typically originate from:

  • Unbalanced heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system
  • Poorly maintained air filters and blowers
  • Contamination of air ducts and air handling units
  • Penetration of airborne contaminants into the building

From our base in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), we extend our indoor air quality consulting services to all of Ontario and Canada.

Occupational (Industrial) Hygiene

Abacon’s services in occupational (industrial) hygiene, health and safety include:

  • Workplace inspection and identification of occupational stressors and hazardous agents
  • Identification of high-risk groups
  • Evaluation of existing processes and controls
  • Sampling, analysis and interpretation of data
  • Worker exposure assessment
  • Design and implementation of remedial measures

Regulatory agencies require that worker exposure to chemical, biological and physical agents in commercial and industrial settings be minimized by both employer and employee by the means of:

  • Engineering controls (e.g. proper ventilation systems)
  • Substitution (use of safer materials and ingredients)
  • Work practices (e.g. housekeeping)
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)

Regulatory and professional organizations have established several procedural and numerical standards to measure, assess and control workplace exposures.

Some of the agents often referred to as “designated substances” (e.g. asbestos, lead, mercury, and others) received added attention that resulted in the introduction of contaminant-specific regulations.

To help avoid adverse health effects of overexposure, guidelines must be followed. From our base in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), we extend our occupational hygiene services to all of Ontario and Canada.

Environmental Site Assessment (ESA)

In the environmental site assessment, remediation, and decommissioning, Abatech provides consulting services at every stage as follows:

  • Environmental site assessment (ESA) Phase I and Phase II
  • A sampling of soil, groundwater, surface water and sediments
  • Determination of the extent of site contamination
  • Design of remediation and decommissioning
  • Monitoring and inspection of cleanup activities
  • Classification of waste and control of disposal
  • Liaison with authorities
  • Record of site condition

Determination of environmental conditions and identification of potential contamination on a piece of land is one of the most important steps in a real estate transaction. The likelihood of contamination is usually identified during a Phase I environmental site assessment.

To establish the presence of actual contamination on-site, a more comprehensive investigation is undertaken. The process of Phase II ESA involves sampling and assessment of soil, groundwater, and surface water as well as the assessment of buildings and structures.

Depending on the planned use of a piece of land, different environmental criteria are applied in the assessment. Where necessary, an environmental cleanup involving remediation of soil, surface water, groundwater and sediments is undertaken. Upon proper cleanup and remediation, a site condition report is issued.

In industrial settings, an assessment and decommissioning of process equipment are often required. Where possible, recycling is attempted.

Management of Hazardous Materials (HazMat) and Waste

Hazardous materials (HazMat) and waste management consulting services provided by Abatech include:

  • Testing, analysis and identification of wastes
  • Waste characterization and classification
  • Hazardous waste notification and manifesting
  • Determination of safe handling procedures
  • Assistance in proper disposal and record-keeping

Hazardous wastes and materials generated in commercial and industrial operations, site remediation activities, or during the abatement of hazardous substances such as waste oils, petroleum wastes, process sludges, heavy metals, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) require classification and proper disposal.

Large industrial operations generate hazardous wastes under appropriate certificates of approval and permits.

Examples of hazardous wastes subject to the registration and controlled disposal typically found in small operations include:

  • Photo processing liquids from photo labs
  • Oils and oily waters from auto shops
  • Waste from activities like removal of lead-based paints (LBP), or
  • Cleanup operations in industrial plants
  • Mercury and mercury-containing amalgams from dental offices

From our base in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), we extend our waste consulting services to all of Ontario and Canada.
